Care After Circumcision

Care After Circumcision

So your baby has been circumcised

Congratulations!

The care is going to be based on the methods used in this hospital.

WHAT WILL YOU SEE ON YOUR BABY AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

• A plaster and a gauze held in place around the newly circumcised penis which will fall off anytime soon.
Or
• A thread tied over the remnant of the foreskin in the ridge of a plastic ring.

CARE OF YOUR BABY

1. PAIN RELIEF

  • Give paracetamol syrup as prescribed by the doctor.

2. CARE OF THE CIRCUMCISION SITE

  • Apply penicillin or gentamicin ointment around the ‘crown’ of the circumcised penis after bathing and each time the diaper is changed.
  • Do not apply hot fomentation in the area or any local gel.

3. BATHING

  • Give baby usual bath.

4. APPLYING NAPPY

  • Use disposable nappy but apply this loosely.
  • Whenever possible leave the area exposed.

PLEASE NOTE:

The plaster may fall off anytime on the first day. This should not be a cause for alarm, just do as taught and your baby is fine.

If the ring (plastibel) method is used, the rim of foreskin around the ring will become dead and separate with the ring in 5 to 10 days. If the ring has not fallen off by the 8th day after the circumcision, you should bring your baby for examination.

Once again, congratulations!
